You Insure Your iPhone… But What About Yourself?

Dear Cheryl&Mack,

My husband, Sam, is a total tech guy. He always has the latest gadgets, and he takes amazing care of them—device insurance, cybersecurity, extra chargers, you name it.

But when it comes to buying life insurance, or critical illness insurance, a recommendation our advisor told us we should have, he shrugs it off.

“I’m healthy,” he says. “I don’t need to worry about that yet.”

I get it—no one wants to think about worst-case scenarios.

But what if he got sick and needed months off work?

What if medical bills piled up?

What if our family had to figure out how to manage without his income?

His perfectly insured laptop wouldn’t be much help then.

How do I get him to see that protecting himself is just as important as protecting his devices?

— Worried but Wise

Dear Worried but Wise,

Oh, Sam. He’s got a backup charger but no backup plan for himself? That’s classic.

The truth is, we’re wired (no pun intended) to insure the things we can physically see.

A cracked iPhone screen? Immediate panic.

But a sudden illness? That feels like a “future problem” until it’s not.

Critical Illness Insurance isn’t about assuming the worst.

It’s about making sure you don’t have to drain your savings or make tough financial choices when life throws a curveball.

If Sam loves a good safety net for his tech, maybe frame it that way—his health and income deserve the same level of care.

Try asking him this: “If your laptop got stolen tomorrow, you’d have a plan.

If you got sick tomorrow, do we?” Sometimes, the right question makes all the difference.

And hey, if he still resists? Maybe remind him that a laptop can’t pay the mortgage. 😉
