I’m 35 years old and traveling for 3 months—Is travel insurance really worth it?

Dear Cheryl&Mack,

I'm a 35-year-old woman planning a 3-month trip to Europe and I’ve been looking into travel insurance options. I’m just wondering if it’s really worth the expense.

To be honest, I’m trying to keep my costs as low as possible for this trip, and I’m not sure if adding insurance is necessary.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

Thank you so much,

Dear Travel Insurance,

I totally understand your hesitation—traveling for three months can already be a big expense, and adding insurance can feel like an extra cost you might not need. However, when it comes to travel, better safe than sorry really applies.

Travel insurance can be a lifesaver if you face any unexpected situations while abroad. It helps cover things like lost luggage, trip cancellations, and especially medical emergencies, which can be expensive in some European countries. Healthcare is privatized in certain areas, and costs can add up quickly if you need treatment.

If something goes wrong with your trip—like getting sick, injured, or dealing with an emergency—good travel insurance will help cover your out-of-pocket expenses, which can save you a lot of money and hassle.

I know you’re trying to keep costs low, so maybe consider looking into a basic policy that focuses on emergency medical coverage and trip interruptions, rather than a more extensive plan. That way, you’re protected without over-spending.

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on a few things, like your personal details, the trip you're taking, and the kind of coverage you're looking for. Essentially, insurance providers use these factors to gauge the chances of you needing to make a claim and how much that claim might cost. Based on that, they adjust your premium accordingly.

These are the things Insurance companies consider;

  • Age

  • pre-existing medical conditions

  • destination

  • additional coverage(s)

  • the deductible option you choose

I hope this helps!

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.

 Safe travels,
